St. Wenceslas Church (Hustopeče, South Moravia, Czechia)

The project story is based on a tragic steeple collapse which destroyed most of the church. Despite the massive damage it was a blessing in disguise as it happened just a few hours before the start of the Sunday mass.

Project scope and purpose

The project of the church in Hustopeče was created in several stages. The first stage was to create the virtual model of the church itself. In the second stage the client requested a model of the adjacent square with buildings. Afterwards, the church interior followed and in the last stage I created a model of the church combining the 3D printing techniques with classic modelling.

This unique complex was created in cooperation with the Municipal Museum and Gallery in Hustopeče and it is now a part of its permanent exhibition. The purpose of the project is to show the public what the original St. Wenceslas Church looked like and how it was placed in the square. The church was replaced by a building of architectonically radically different style.

Project creation

The original church was drawn in detail in the project documentation, by coincidence put together just before the steeple collapse and church devastation. The plans became the basis for my model. These important documents, including detailed photographic documentation, were provided by the Museum in Hustopeče in cooperation with the Institute of Monument Conservation.
In the interior, reproductions of the altarpieces and the Stations of the Cross have been used and documented. However, a larger number of statue models are not a part of the project by investor´s decision. Despite that, the interior animation conveys the original atmosphere.

Topographic and cadastral maps provided enough information to model the terrain. The Hustopeče cadastral map still shows a plot of land belonging to the Roman Catholic Church, which defines the boundaries of the original church. The new church plot is partially identical with the old one and thus they overlap, but it is still possible to determine the original church exact position.

The adjacent square and  buildings were modelled only as a background to the church. As to the modelling process, only the town hall scale is based on original plans, the other buildings are modelled according to the scale of the town hall. Their position in the model was determined with the use of the cadastral map.

Final outputs

Each project is inherently unique and each client has different requirements for the output forms. As to this project, the output was primarily an animation of the entire complex, which included both exterior and interior fly-throughs. The church exterior was rendered together with the adjacent square, giving the model original atmosphere. The church interior was mostly supplemented with original furnishings. Their form and placement were based on descriptions and photo documentation and consulted by experts and contemporary witnesses.

3D printed church model

The graphically processed data of the church project was used for the processing of the model variant in the form of 3D printing and the subsequent modeling technique was used to create a mass model in the scale of 1:100. For smaller models, such as this one, the 3D printing method can be applied to the whole object. For larger units, this method is combined with others, for example, some parts are cut out of plywood using a laser.

The original church was incorporated into the square, which sloped in two directions, so the model of the church also includes a part of the terrain, adjacent to the foot of the walls of the building, The model was made from several separate parts, which were assembled, cemented and finished.

Animation processing

The animated video tour combined exterior and interior tours. The video clip was accompanied by texts, descriptions and original photographs. The music background of the clip was chosen by the client. The final assembly of the clip took several dozen hours of video rendering and subsequent post-production in combining the individual shots and the overall assembly of the complete clip.

In general, the clips can use footage of the current state of the buildings, and combine it with animations. Nowadays, drone footage is increasingly being used, where the building can be flown around from all sides and very high quality footage can be captured.
